Call to transform Cape landmark

Designers, innovators and anyone with a creative plan to change the face of the Foreshore have two weeks to come up with proposals that will change the face of one of Cape Town's landmark buildings - the Naspers Centre.

And owners, Media24, have committed R15 million to making sure the winning proposals are implemented.

The design competition, which marks the centenary celebration of Naspers and coincides with Cape Town's year as World Design Capital, closes on February 28, and the organisers, Media 24 and Cape Town Design NPC, are keeping mum about the proposals that have already starting coming in.

Cape Town Design NPC is the implementing company driving the World Design Capital programme.

Nicky Swartz, programme co-ordinator of World Design Capital, said the Naspers building was designed in 1962.

Once the tallest building in Africa, it was bought by Media24 in 1981.

Competition curator Rashiq Fataar, the founder and director of think tank Future Cape Town, said the Foreshore was an exciting area because of new developments, including the proposed cruise liner terminal, the new Christiaan Barnard Hospital, the Artscape precinct redevelopment, and expansion of the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Once considered the gateway to the city and the continent, the Foreshore had become Cape Town's back door because of poor design choices.

The other curators are independent media consultant Paul Duncan, quantity surveyor Sean Cowgill and architect and urban designer Luyanda Mpahlwa.

The winner will get R200 000, and second- and third-placed entrants will win R80 000 and R40 000 respectively. The organisers have decided to have three top entries, since elements of all three may be considered for the final design. Anyone in South Africa may enter, irrespective of whether they are in the design field.
