Unapproved R2m soccer centre in Sea Point must close

A private company, which built the R2 million Gianluca Vialli Soccer Centre at Sea Point High School, has lost an application for leave to appeal a Western Cape High Court judgment ordering it to cease operating the facility.

This means the centre has to stop operating by Monday.

Emilel Investments 19 completed the construction of the centre last June.

With the blessing of the school principal, Emilel forked out the funds to turn the school's unused, dilapidated tennis courts into two new fivea-side, Fifa-approved astroturf football pitches and a modern clubhouse.

The biggest earner was a friendly corporate league in which companies' five-a-side teams competed. A weekend market operated by businessman David van Rensburg was also introduced.

However, residents around the school lodged an application to stop the operation of the facility, saying it contravened the city's zoning regulations and constituted a common law nuisance because of the timing of activities, loud noise and parking problems.

In September, Judge André le Grange found the city's consent for the facility was necessary. He gave Emilel and Van Rensburg until 6pm on December 12 to stop operating and to consider their options.

On Tuesday, Emilel applied for leave to appeal the ruling.

Comments:

the residents of seapoint are in some twilight zone of english colonialism at its worst.....the beachfront area should be a hive of activity, in maputo a similar stretch would have a bar every 20 metres.....it should be noisy, fun, and belong to the people of the city....and not the elite in their ivory towers. theres no other area in cape town thats as vocal about their environment and as insistent on retaining the status quo.......

what a great place Seapoint would be if it weren't for such awful 'nimby' residents.

I live here and I agree with Jon. Lets make it a real social strip.

The entire sea front area from the Waterfront to Camps Bay must be developed for all the Citizens and not be the private preserve of the overwhelmingly relocated Vaalies in their expensive secure condos.

This is all a huge pile of nonsense. Firstly the reports are one sided and additional papers have been filed and they are NOT closing. I play at the soccer club from time to time and the service they offer the Sea Point community is outstanding. My kids also play and attend skills development courses there, we have also been part of charity projects which were run, these are good guys! Previously there were vagrants living in the road and it was an eye sore, they cleaned the whole street up. The complainants are old ladies who have more money than they know what to do with, it is such a dissapointment that they are still living in the colonial 30's. I hope that continue for a long time to come

RULES ARE RULES--THATS THE BOTTOM LINE!

@Paul Morkel…clearly you are living on the same delusional planet as the residents against this soccer facility! Yes, there are rules but this could have been worked out in a far more civil manner. These residents seem to have far too much money and time on their hands and no conscience! Have they ever stopped to think about the damage they are actually doing? Apart from the livelihood they are taking away from people working at the centre (yes people actually work and not everyone lives off inheritance) have they EVER thought about the hundreds of school children affected by their spite? Without this facility, much needed funds are gone from the school. These funds help to improve the education of these children and shape them into young adults that will one day contribute to our society in a positive way. Will these pathetic balcony bullies be contributing to the school in any way if the centre is shut down? Doubtful! Shame on all of you!

Not about money - more about consideration to the local residents - Football hooligans contribute to our society? Pick a better site before you just go ahead with antics that are unruly.
