Tshwane council bills go online

Property owners in Pretoria are now able to view, download and make payments for all municipal accounts electronically from anywhere using their computers and cellphones.

Yesterday, the city launched the eTshwane service, a free online system that provides a full history of accounts and allows users to interact with the municipality - from lodging complains, to queries and compliments. The system allows real-time updates on payments.

eTshwane will cost the city R19.5 million for the first year and R13.8m for the next two years.

The system has gone live and is expected to eliminate delays and faulty cut-offs of municipal services experienced by consumers when paying through third parties.

It sees the city moving away from traditional manual processes to embrace a new paperless process. Residents have an option to receive statements through SMS, MMS and e-mail.

Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said at the launch the system demonstrated how the municipality was beginning to live the smart city concept. 'Studies show that municipal bills are seventh on the list of priority payments for most people. We hope to change that with eTshwane. The implementation of the system does not mean anyone will lose their jobs. Instead, it enables us to increase the capacity of dealing with problems that may come up.'

The mayor added that the city was bullish about meeting the goals it had set in order to become a smart city.

eTshwane, a partnership with the SA Post Office, already operates secure and complete transactional portals for numerous national, provincial and local government departments and institutions.

Sheldon Quarmby, chief executive of system developers Interfile, said the system was secure and reliable, and had been enhanced over the years.

To register, customers must go to www.tshwane.gov.za and click on eTshwane. The city is also urging all customers to submit the information for their preferred method or contact the call centre at 012 358 9999.
