"Solar City" planned for Saldanha Bay

A Dutch property developer plans to build what he calls a "solar city" - a multi-billion rand, green housing project that will be self- sustaining and completely powered by renewable energy in Saldanha Bay.

He believes that it will be a world first.

Property investor Robert Baron owns three farms - a total of 1 600 hectares of land. He and several foreign investors plan to invest a whopping R6.5bn into the green housing project, which will include 6 000 houses for lower to middle-income groups and will have its own renewable power source from solar and wind energy.

It will also have office parks, restaurants and shops.

He said: "You can call me a modern Robin Hood. There is a dire need for housing for the lower and middle-income brackets."

Plans for the project have been nine years in the making.

He said with major industrial projects being proposed for the town, housing was needed to accompany economic growth. "Whoever gets the construction contract has to sign a clause saying they will use local labour and transfer vital skills to the communities. The construction phase will create 7 500 jobs and 5 000 direct jobs would be created in maintenance and running of the wind generators, sewerage water purification, plumbing and power generation."

Baron said that renewable energy and the use of recycling technologies were essential for running this green city. "Companies could use the power from the solar city when residents are at work. This way home owners would be able to use the power supply as leverage for better housing subsidies if they work for these companies, or they could renegotiate better interest rates on their home loans with these companies."

He said a feasibility study for the project would be done soon and then they would know the costs of the houses.

"While these costs will be kept as low as possible, investors will receive good returns from office blocks, restaurants and shops."

Very noble, I admire what Mr Baron is trying to do and hope only more well off people in this country would be willing to give back the way he is. I wish these guys everything of the best. Now not to sound negative - I am a realist after all - but if the government does not stand to gain from this, or if they do not get a very healthy payoff to get this project started, I doubt it will ever happen. Sad but true of our banana republic.

Very nice, now will the banks also come to the party and actually give loans! I found that there are so many GAP housing projects but no finance for the very people that are suppose to stay in these houses. I have seen so many announcements like these (big newspaper coverage with the normal political actors), which quietly disappear into the sunset. Thanks for trying though.

Hey, Gavin, you have a banana brain. Go and look up the meaning of banana republic in a political science dictionary. Locl and foreign Investment (incluidng from positive white S. Africans) are happening all over SA past 16 yrs without "pay off to govt." You shld read more realeavnt info such as the World bank investmnt report. Time to ditch the white christain racists attitudes. Try to live a positive life in SA, where you living a Fisrt world life at 3rd world cost or go to cold Canada or Austarlia where the unemployment rate is high and you must do yur own housework without a maid. Stop bitching and moaning. So pathetic. Many SA whites must have terrible psychological problems living in SA.

Great idea - hope it works... but... The gov is about to spend billions on new power stations, and not much on 'clean' power. They are missing the opportunity this Mr Baron is seeing... however, why Saldanha? There is no water - and they also have a relatively small population. Do they need more people there? Need to think about this...

Dear Mr Baron Please do not forget to include biogas and on site waste water treatment in your suite of Renewable Energy sources. Wind and solar are the attractive sources of RE, but biogas digesters are the workhorses that may be a bit smelly but add enormous savings to your development, whilst costing a lot less than wind and solar.
