Road from Cape Town to Cairo moves closer to reality

An Egyptian and a Sudanese company signed an agreement on Tuesday to build a key section of the Cape-to-Cairo highway, an Egyptian official said.

The road has been a dream since the late 19th century, when British officials planned a road to connect their colonies in Africa. Under the agreement, a 400-km (250-mile) stretch of highway will be built between Aswan in Egypt and Dongola in Sudan at a cost of $500 million, Osama Saleh, chairman of the General Authority for Investment, told reporters.

This is the last section to be built between Khartoum and Cairo, although major gaps remain unfinished in East Africa.

"The project aims to connect Egypt's Alexandria and Cape Town in South Africa," Saleh said.

Egypt's state Holding Co. for Building and Construction and Sudan's privately owned Zawaya Group for Development and Investment signed the memorandum of understanding.

Jalopy & MKV, please don't forget that they have to leave much of that road usable at all times for commuters and people going to/from the Airport, it's not like they can 'build' a new road there. And they have been busy with a lot of roadworks at the same time, also the CT stadium.

@Self Why bother with obvious whingers who have no reason to write anything good about South Africa? There is a difference to building a new highway as compared to fixing mistakes of the short-sighted past

The road is already there. Has been for years but very poor state. Most of it was tarred over the last 2 years. There is a road from Wadi Halfa to Aswan but it's not yet open to the public. To date you had/have to use the ferry. This 250km is the last stretch from Wadi Halfa to the Egypt border as the egypt side is already tarred. The last untarred section of road from CT to Cairo will be Isiolo to Moyale in North Kenya (500km) The Chinese are already busy but have been so for a nhumber of years now and not got anywhere fast...

It will take you longer to get through the South African side of the Beit Bridge border than the rest of the journey!

It will be great to travel to Cario! I agreed with Anon. just improve that very old road. and improve the security. put the Engen or Bp station each every 2 hours drive. To look after the adventurers, drivers, hikers, and so on.
