Joburg property owners must continue to pay rates despite postal strike

Joburg residents and ratepayers will not receive their monthly statements from the City of Joburg as SA Post Office employees have been on strike since July 6.
The city has advised customers that this protected strike has affected the posting of municipal statements.

However, residents can access their accounts by either visiting their local walk-in centres or by calling in to the call centre to get their due balances.

City spokesperson Kgamanyane Maphologela said customers were still responsible for paying their accounts even though statements would be delayed, to avoid getting into arrears.

"If customers cannot access their due balances, they are urged to use their latest statements received to make a payment. We also advise that customers can make payments on their average monthly consumption if necessary."

"It is important to continue paying for services used," he said.

Customers can phone the call centre on 0860 (Joburg) 562874 which also offers an automated balance enquiry system.

Alternatively they can visit any customer service centre to obtain a copy of their account, or log on to www.joburg.org.za to download a copy of their statement on e-services
