Pinetown property owners' plea over illegal business
Members of the Manors Neighbourhood Watch in Pinetown are fed up with a local property owner using his home as a base of operation for a truck repair company, and have once again asked the city for help.
'This company does repair work on weekends, there are always trucks in and out of the property, the trucks block Manors Road on a regular basis, and they have smashed storm-water drains,' said a member of the neighbourhood watch, who declined to be named.
The house in question, in Scott Street, was visited by The Mercury yesterday, and four large trucks were found parked in the yard. One was being inspected by a man in blue overalls, with tool boxes visible nearby.
'We have involved the metro police who have also fined them, but the diesel fumes and noise pollution into all hours of the night continues,' said the member.
Metro police spokesman Eugene Msomi said matters of this nature were handled by the municipality's town planning department's enforcement unit, which had fined the property owner on previous occasions.
Despite the fine, the operation allegedly continued as normal. The residents are now asking for it to be stopped once and for all.
A similar case was reported by The Mercury last month, inwhich a trucking company was operating from a nearby Queensburgh suburb.
'Trucks are shaking our houses, diesel fumes are everywhere, there are broken manhole covers in the street, we are not happy,' a resident of Seymour Road said at the time.
eThewkini municipality was unable to provide comment on the Scott Road business at the time of going to print. The Mercury was also not able to track down the registered owner of the property for comment yesterday.
