Pick-up zone at Durban airport to be upgraded

The problematic pick-up zone at Durban's King Shaka International Airport will be closed for the next two months with construction under way as the zone is re-engineered to alleviate peak-time traffic congestion.

The pick-up zone at King Shaka International Airport has been closed for a redesign to alleviate congestion.

The construction project has come in the wake of complaints from frustrated travellers and the public about the poorly designed and restricted pick-up zone at the airport.

Airports Company SA (Acsa) said the pick-up zone had been closed yesterday for construction and would be open to the public again on June 1.

Bongiwe Pityi, the airport's assistant general manager, said that because of the "inconvenience factor" during construction, Acsa would be offering 30 minutes free parking at the nearby multi-storey parkade for the benefit of all customers.

Pityi said the re-designed pick-up zone would alleviate congestion and offer better access to the multi-storey parkade.

Airport spokesman Colin Naidoo said the project at the zone had come about following "operational constraints", and complaints and suggestions from customers.

"King Shaka International has been fully operational since May 1, 2010... This project is part of our effort to continuously improve our service and to make the airport users' experience seamless.

"We appeal to the public for their co-operation and patience during the construction.

"We also encourage our customers to arrive earlier to avoid delays," he said.

Naidoo said the public should follow the direction signage in strategic locations near the main entrance of the multi-storey parkade.

Further details on the new look of the pick-up zone and how it would work would be provided closer to the time it re-opens.

For any parking related queries during this period, the public can call 032 436 6626/56 or e-mail ksiapark ing-AT-airports.co-DOT-za
