Parkhurst bowling club awaits tenders for redevelopment

The old Parkhurst Bowling Club is up for grabs. The tender to redevelop this park closes at noon today.

The Parkhurst Bowling Club, established in about 1938, is to be redeveloped.

The club was established in about 1938 and was popular for many years, but the property has now become derelict, vandalised and overgrown.

Local councillor Tim Truluck said a municipal underground water leak had caused a wetland to develop on the property.

In welcoming development of the old site by the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC), Truluck said the JPC, residents and business associations had held several meetings about the nature of the new development.

It was agreed that the land could only be used primarily for sports and recreational purposes and not for high-density developments.

Truluck said small related retail outlets, such as a sports shop or coffee shop/restaurant, would be allowed.

"They will not be allowed to stay open late and will not be allowed to play loud music or stage live events.

"Most of the development will be on the current bowls club site. If development is proposed to be located on the soccer field site, then the proposed location must be tested for suitability as it is an old landfill site.

"The tender will be a longterm one - between 20 to 30 years - to allow the developer to recoup the expenses," he said.

Furthermore, the winning tenderer would have to adhere to the requirements as laid down by the different city departments.

"In the Parkhurst bowls and soccer club area, they will not be allowed to remove mature trees, build on the boundary line or within 40m of the Braamfontein Spruit, and will have to get Joburg Roads Agency approval for their parking and inlet/outlet into Victory Park Road.

"The club property is an important link to urban space, linking Greenside, Parkhurst and Parkview with the river, therefore there has to be access through it for walking or cycling," he said.
