Outstanding payment causes land sale furore
The Department of Rural Development and Land Reform is owing land sellers close to R600 million in outstanding payments on purchased land.
The department also faces more than 20 lawsuits of about R500m for non-payment. AgriSA legal and policy advisor Annelize Crosby called for a wide-ranging investigation into the department's activities.
"If there was so much money outstanding it means that the department had by far exceeded its budget allocation," said Crosby.
"This has put people in bankruptcy and some had to incur legal fees in their attempts to get the monies that they are being owed," she added.
