New Mandela statue overlooks Pretoria

Nelson Mandela, who loomed large in life and death, will look over South Africa for years to come from the nation's capital after a 9m statue bearing his likeness was unveiled at the Union Buildings in Pretoria yesterday.

A 9-metre bronze statue of Nelson Mandela was unveiled at the Union Buildings in Pretoria yesterday.

At the unveiling - a day after Mandela was laid to rest in Qunu - President Jacob Zuma said of the statue: 'We are happy that we are here. You will notice that in all the statues that have been made of Madiba, he is raising his fist and at times stretching it. That derives from the slogan of the ANC,' Zuma said.

The statue depicts a smiling Mandela with outstretched arms.

In Cape Town, mayor Patricia de Lille walked with hundreds of people after having renamed the Fan Walk the Walk of Remembrance in honour of Mandela and to celebrate South Africa's history and the struggle against apartheid.

Discussions were also under way to erect a statue of Mandela in Cape Town, possibly at the Grand Parade, the city said yesterday.
