Joburg to use owls against rat plague

The City of Joburg has chosen owls to fight a rat plague in Alexandra, city spokesman Nkosinathi Nkabinde said yesterday.

"Owl nesting and release boxes have been installed in three schools in Alexandra as this three-year project will be educating schools on the role owls play in eradicating rats," Nkabinde said.

"We have to eliminate the conditions in which the rodents thrive," he said, calling on residents to co-operate.

Nkabinde said dumping and the careless disposal of food and waste were the primary causes of rodent infestation.
