Joburg pensioners advised to apply for property rebates

City of Joburg pensioners have until Saturday to apply or reapply for their rebates or risk being subjected to the same conditions as other ratepayers.

If the application is not done by this date, then rates will be levied as normal in terms of the new valuation roll, without a rebate from July 1. That process will not be reversible as the rebate is only applied from the date of application.

During the city's 2018/19 budget announced last month, new qualification targets were set. The conditions for the rebates are:

  • The properties should be valued at below R2.5 million

  • Residents must be 60 years or older, must own the property and must also be staying at that property

  • Pensioners dependent on a national security grant qualify for 100% rebate on successful application

  • Pensioners who are not on the national security grant, but whose gross monthly income falls below R9 244, qualify for 100% rebate

  • Pensioners who are not on a national security grant, but whose gross monthly income is above R9 244, but less than R15 846, qualify for 50% rebate

  • The rebate is applicable for only one property should the applicant own more than one property, and

  • If there is dual property ownership, one of the owners must be 60 years of age or older

There are different application forms for each of the categories.

The forms and further information about the procedures are on the city's website.

Printed copies of the forms are available at the city's revenue walk-in centres.
