Joburg most popular city in Africa

Joburg emerged as the most popular destination city in Africa in 2016, followed by Cape Town.

The annual Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index showed that Joburg welcomed 4.57 million international visitors in 2016, a 24% increase on the previous year. Cape Town was the second most popular African destination city .

Nigeria’s Lagos was next in the popularity ranks, followed by Casablanca in Morocco, and Cairo in Egypt. Durban came 6th once again .

According to the index, Johannesburg also topped the rankings in terms of international visitor expenditure, with travellers spending $2.56 billion (R34.9 billion) in 2016.

The Mastercard Index of Global Destination Cities ranks the world’s top 132 destination cities in terms of visitor volume and spend in the 2016 calendar year.

It and also gives insight into the fastest growing destination cities, the reasons why people travel, and what they spend their money on.
