Help name Cape Town's MyCiTi stations

The mayoral committee yesterday agreed that the new plan, after approval by the council, be submitted to the national Department of Transport and the National Treasury.

Based on the public's comments, and those from the national government, an amended business plan would be submitted for approval by no later than October.

A set of names for the first 17 trunk stations was compiled by the IRT project team, guided by three principles - the names had to be kept relatively short; the names had to be based on local geography or landmarks that were easily recognisable and could orientate users; and offensive or insensitive names had to be avoided.

The proposed names for stations include Woodstock, Paarden Eiland, Neptune, Section, Zoarvlei, Lagoon Beach, Woodbridge, Milnerton, Racecourse, Sunset Beach, Bayside, Granger Bay, Stadium, Thibault Square, Civic Centre, and Airport.

Brooklyn Station could alternatively be called Vrystaat, as it is north of the intersection with Vrystaat Road, while Bayside could be called Blaauwberg Station.

The city said the names would be implemented unless objections were received within the relevant period.

Comments:

We object more Afrikaner names to SA. Be more constructive in issuing names for the public to approve. The whole SA has names with Afrikaner backgrounds. Brooklyn and Bayside could stay as they are present when one looks for those areas.
