Eastern Cape architectural excellence to be honoured

The finalists of the third annual regional Sapoa Excellence in Property Development Awards for the Nelson Mandela Metro, sponsored by Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, have been selected.

Shamwari Town House and 85 Cape Road are the finalists in the refurbishment - industrial and commercial category.

Each focused the refurbishment differently as they are aimed at different markets - one for work and the other for the leisure market.

The five finalists in the new buildings - industrial and commercial category are 61-63 Worracker Street Office Park, a new office building in popular Newton Park; the Lynx Office Park, a new landmark close to the airport; North Park Industrial Warehouse, a neatly designed functional warehouse that can accommodate several tenants; the well-known Rafi's Appliances, that has moved to custom-designed premises; and the new five-star Radisson Blu Hotel in Port Elizabeth.

The Old School Board building was the only entry in the public sector development category and this Grahamstown building is a period piece that has been restored.

In the residential - building and township category, the two finalists are the Echo Edge development, with its dramatic placing on the edge of the Baakens valley, and Boneyards, a recently completed three-storey apartment block on the Jeffrey's Bay beachfront.

The judges of this year's awards are Hubert Sieg of Imbono FJA Architects and SAPOA regional committee member; strategist and motivational speaker, Jane Stevenson, who serves on the Board of the Port Elizabeth Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Business Women's Association; Arthur Lees-Rolfe, owner of a number of RE/MAX offices in the PE area; and Hugo Ras, director of BVi Consulting Engineers.

Hubert Sieg, chairperson of the judging panel, says: "Once again the entries for this year's awards have been excellent. Our developers continue to show their confidence in the Eastern Cape economy and are being supported by talented and insightful professionals who are adding value to their developments in these challenging times."

Richard Thomas, regional executive of Nedbank Corporate Property Finance Cape, says the bank's sustained focus on the Eastern Cape is proving successful and its local portfolio is showing consistent growth.

The gala dinner and awards ceremony will be held at The Bay Suite at The Radisson Blu Hotel on Tuesday. Tickets for the event cost R2 750 for a table of 10, which includes the awards, a three-course dinner and entertainment. Individual tickets will be sold at R275 each.
