Cape Town stadium handed over

A handful of construction workers dangled from ropes, and the hum of power tools kept to an easy level as Cape Town Stadium contractors handed their work over to city mayor Dan Plato yesterday.

Despite the 30 degree C heat outside, the temperature was cool inside the 68 000-seat structure. Europe's "The Final Countdown" played over the new sound system.

Plato, city executive director Mike Marsden and co-contractor WBHO's Mike Wylie issued wide congratulations to all involved. "This puts a new meaning to the words 'worth the wait'," Plato said.

Wylie, who oversaw the 32 months that led up to yesterday's tough deadline along with Murray & Roberts' Sean Flanagan, said: "The stadium really got into us, and we didn't want to let it down."

According to the city, the stadium is now "practically complete", although small details still need finishing touches and the pitch still needs a few weeks of growth before it's ready for its opening game on January 23.

He handed a half-metre long silver-painted "key of the door" to Plato, who quipped: "I first need to see the door where that key must fit."

Winemaker Achim von Arnim then popped a bottle of bubbly using a sabre, and hundreds of red, green, blue, yellow, white and black balloons - representing the South African flag - rose from the green pitch into the sky.

While stadium costs were still to be accurately calculated, Marsden said it was worth about R4.5 billion. Some 2 500 workers were involved.

I hope there's a fitting memorial to the worker that died whilst this stadium was being built.

As South-Africans we should be proud of this great stadium in the most beautiful city in the world. Don't stare blindly at the building cost. Most landmarks in the world are critisized during construction, but eventually draws the tourists and the benefits.

Yes, we pay for the stadium and who makes the money from the tourists and 2010 world cup?

As a Capetonian living in london, I can tell all the folk back home, you have something to be proud of. We've all been showing pictures of the stadium under construction to our co-workers, and they are well impressed. The Green Point stadium puts Stamford Bridge and the Emirates stadia to shame. Let's hope it inspires the people to get behind Bafana Bafana. Bring on the World Cup!

I agree with Chase that the Greenpoint stadium looks fantastic, but comparing it to Stamford Bridge is irrelevant, since this is an old 40,000 stadium that has been redeveloped. The Emirates Stadium, however, stands comparison with any football stadium in the world, however - with every seat having a view of the ground, and more importantly, being sold out at it's capacity of 61,000 for every home Premier league game.(18 per season) - this excludes European,League Cup and FA cup games. The Emirates also generates the highest income of any Football club stadium in the UK and will have paid for itself by 2014. It is also on the list for potential hosting stadiums for the 2018 World Cup if awarded to England. My question is therefore - Can the Greenpoint stadium be used regularly after the World Cup to recoup it's expenditure?
