Cape Town releases happiness levels of residents

Residents of Durbanville, Brackenfell and Table View are happiest with the City of Cape Town's performance, while households in Gugulethu, Hanover Park and Nyanga are the least satisfied.

This is according to the city's latest community satisfaction survey. It found that overall, 60 percent of residents believed the city's performance was between "good" and "excellent".

Residents could rate the city's performance as poor, fair, good, very good or excellent.

Areas including Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu and Khayelistha reported the lowest ratings - less than 60 percent of residents there gave the city a rating of good and above.

It's the fifth year in which the survey has been conducted to measure residents' attitudes towards service delivery.

There were 3 000 interviews at residents' homes, 700 telephone interviews with businesses and five focus groups.

Demetri Qually, the mayoral committee member for corporate services, briefed the media on the findings yesterday.

Overall, most residents surveyed, 63 percent, said the city's performance was "good, very good or excellent".

In the northern district, which includes Durbanville and Brackenfell, 80 percent of residents rated the performance along those lines.

This is the highest score out of the eight districts polled. But it's slightly down from the 84 percent in this area in the previous survey.

In the western district, the rating for "good" to "excellent" service was 67 percent.

Part of this district - Table View and Milnerton - is home to the Myciti bus service. Areas here include central Cape Town and Dunoon.

In the southern district, including Claremont, Muizenberg and Grassy Park, 65 percent rated the city "good" to "excellent".

Of residents in the district including Gordon's Bay and Blue Downs, 64 percent rated the city between good and excellent.

In the Tygerberg district, 62 percent put the city's performance in that category. Areas here include Elsies River, Bellville, Belhar and Goodwood.

The figures were lower in the Klipfontein district - Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Nyanga, Heideveld and Manenberg - where just 52 percent of residents rated services as good.
