Cape Town lays down fireworks by-law
The sale of fireworks by informal traders without a permit is illegal in terms of a trading by-law.
All approved, organised fireworks displays in Cape Town are presented by licensed fireworks contractors who operate under the Explosives Act, Number 26 of 1956; the Explosives Regulations; and the city's Community Fire Safety By-Law.
Fireworks must be sold in sealed packages.
Only buy fireworks from authorised dealers who display relevant permits from the police.
People who want to attend fireworks displays must follow safety instructions given by fireworks operators, event organisers, and security personnel and keep behind safety barriers.
The city has a list of designated areas for the discharging of fireworks.
For information about the location of the designated sites, contact the city's Disaster Operations Centre on 080-911-HELP (4357).
