Cape Town implements plumbing requirement for sale of property

In a bid to save water, the City of Cape Town has introduced the plumbing equivalent of a wiring certificate for the sale of homes.

The new rule, in the form of an amendment to an existing by-law, resulted from a suggestion by a member of the public, it said yesterday.

The amendment laid down that before transfer of a property, a home seller had to submit a certificate from an accredited plumber.

This would state that water installation at the dwelling conformed to the National Building Regulations and the by-law and that there were no plumbing defects. The amendments were approved by the council this week and would now be sent to the provincial government for promulgation.

just three days ago i suggested the same to a plumber that had to replace a burst geyser in our new home, only been in the home for 2 months. And unknown to us was the fact that one of the outlet pipes ended mid roof, so needless to say it came through the ceiling. This will definately put new home owners at ease.

In the same way I had the electricians who issued the electrical compliance back to my new home to come and fix the rubbish they missed the first time (and charged the previous owner an arm and a leg to do). In general, despite the carping, agree there will be benefit, but there is some dodgy stuff that passes as 'compliant' and some dodgy charging that happens to get it 'compliant'...

Why shouldn't the plumbers get on the gravy train. The electricians have been on it for years.

What about the bricklayers why can't they have some too.

So now we got to pay a eletrical inspector, a beatle inspector, a plumber, the lawer, the agent, the municipality, and the list goes on. No wonder house prices are out of reach of most South Africans!
