Cape Town graffiti artists brighten up MyCiTi stations

Local graffiti artists are taking over part of Cape Town's public transport stations. Street artists hired by the city have just finished the last of 50 art commissions at MyCiTi bus stations across the city.

The Turf Club stop near Montague Gardens.

"We use this as an opportunity to showcase the talent of our local artists and to give visitors a sense of who we are," said the city's mayco member for transport for councillor Brett Herron.

"Each of the works is exciting and unique. I have been thrilled with the outcome of this project, which is making a valuable contribution to upgrading our built environment and creating welcoming and special public transport access points."

The Mitchells Plain station was the last of the 50.

After nine months of collaboration between five artists, the pieces surrounding the topic, "Know Your Roots", depict the heritage and culture of the Mitchells Plain Town Centre. Wood cut-out installations stand opposite the station, while a mural and vinyl graphics collage decorate the station's fa├žade.

Other MyCiTi art across the city includes mosaic works, collages, sculptures, ceramics, murals, drawings and sandblasted images. The five artists are Wayne Beukes, Andre Beukes, Maxwell Southgate, Tony Coetzee and Rayaan Cassiem. However, the city and art community know them as Conform, Drone, Mak1One, Ice7 and Rayzer, respectively .While Rayzer is from Heideveld , the other four artists were born in Mitchells Plain.

"My brother (Drone) and I used to visit the Town Centre as little boys. I remember it as hub of exchanges," said Conform, 33, who co-ordinated the project. "My first thoughts were to paint different characters inspired by the bustling day-to-day activities at the Town Centre. I knew all the artists would paint in their own unique style creating a diverse looking piece."

Conform was first chosen to display his art at the Turf Club and Circle East stations on the Koeberg Road route. The curator then asked him to lead the longterm Mitchells Plain collaborative project.
