Cape Town aims to become a World Design Capital

Cape Town will announce its intention to bid for the World Design Capital title in 2014 during the Design Indaba Conference and Expo at the Cape Town International Convention Center between 23 and 28 February, 2010.

The official announcement will be accompanied by a 'call to action' for Capetonians to get involved in the lead up to the submission of Cape Town's bid book in February 2011.

This call to action is aimed at finding a theme for the bid document and it will ask the citizens to answer questions such as "What makes Cape Town a World Design Capital?" and "Why should Cape Town become the World Design Capital in 2014?"

This process is expected to yield a true reflection of the creative resources that Cape Town holds in order to build a strong case for the city to be designated World Design Capital in 2014. The World Design Capital bid will also be activated at other platforms and events throughout the year on Cape Town's calendar of events and activities.

World Design Capital is a biennial designation given to cities that are committed to using design as a tool for economic, social and cultural development. It recognizes cities that have been transformed for the better through design. The grand prize is a year-long design led program of events, which presents an international marketing and networking opportunity for the city.

Seoul, South Korea is the current holder of this prestigious title. It has gone to Torino, Italy (2008) previously and in 2012 Helsinki will hold the title.
