Northern Cape Real Estate Overview

A deceptively arid province, the Northern Cape – and especially the Namaqualand area - erupts into a carpet of flowers every spring and draws thousands of visitors.

And the province has much else to offer too, including mineral wealth and vast conservation areas including the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies Falls National Park and the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Conservation Park.

Around 1m people live in the Northern Cape and Kimberley, the world-renowned diamond mecca, is the province’s capital. Other important towns include Upington (home to the province’s karakul sheep and dried fruit industries) Springbok, Kuruman, De Aar and the booming iron-ore mining centre of Kathu..

While sheep-farming remains the mainstay of the Karoo area, game-farming and food production play an increasingly important role in the province’s economic makeup. There is irrigation farming on a large scale on the south bank of the Orange River and the Namaqua Development Corridor, which focuses on the exportation of sea products, is also important to the Northern Cape’s economic prospects.

Property types and prices in the Northern Cape vary greatly, ranging from vast sheep and game farms in the Karoo that sell for millions of rands to tiny old cottages in small dusty villages.

Kimberley has the most active property market. Once a raucous tent town, this small city now has modern shopping malls, office complexes, quiet suburbs and broad, tree-lined streets, and continues to attract new development. The types of residential property available include freehold houses, apartments, security villages, retirement complexes and guesthouses.
