Limpopo Province Real Estate Overview

Dubbed the “gateway to Africa”, Limpopo is South Africa’s northernmost province and is probably best known for its ancient trading roots.
Mapungubwe, the “Lost City of Gold” located near the northern town of Alldays, was South Africa’s first kingdom. Its people traded gold and ivory as far afield as Egypt, India and even China, and it thrived for 400 years before being abandoned in the 14th century.
Today the province continues to play an important trading role albeit in the more mundane realm of fruit and vegetables. Indeed, the province is responsible for producing almost half the annual R2bn turnover of Johannesburg's fresh produce market. Coffee, tea and cattle farming also occur on a sizable scale.
Tourism and mining are the other major earners – and influences on Limpopo’s property market. The Kruger National Park and 54 other reserves attract hundreds of thousands of tourists annually and sustain the strong demand for guesthouses, B&Bs and game lodges. Mining activities account for over a fifth of the provincial economy and have recently boosted the demand for housing in many smaller towns.
Polokwane is Limpopo’s thriving capital and the property market here is underpinned by strong demand from pulbic servants. Other significant towns include Musina, Makhado, Phalaborwa, Tzaneen, Modimolle, Bela Bela and Lephalale and of these, the last three have seen the most new development in recent years.
Located in the Waterberg region famous for its hot springs and spectacular views, they now boast many luxury golf, game and lifestyle estates and are popular weekend retreats and second-home locations for wealthy Johannesburg and Pretoria residents.
